✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent to Waḥshī, the killer of Ḥamzah, inviting him to Islam. He sent back: “O Muḥammad, how can you call me to your religion while you claim that whoever kills, associates partners, or commits adultery meets a great punishment, with the torment doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will remain in it disgraced—and I have done all that? Do you find any concession for me?” Then God, may He be glorified, revealed: “Except him who repents, believes, and works righteousness. For those, God will change their evil deeds into good deeds, and God is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” Waḥshī said: “O Muḥammad, this is a severe condition—‘except him who repents, believes, and works righteousness’—perhaps I cannot do this.” Then God revealed: “Indeed, God does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.” Waḥshī said: “O Muḥammad, I see there is a will after that, so I do not know whether I will be forgiven or not. Is there anything other than this?” Then God revealed: “O My servants who have transgressed against yourselves, do not despair of God’s mercy. Indeed, God forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” Waḥshī said: “This is it,” and he came and embraced Islam. So the people said: “O Messenger of God, if we commit what Waḥshī committed [will we be forgiven too]?” He said: “This is for all Muslims generally.”
