✧ The Prophet ﷺ delayed the ʿisha prayer one night until the people of the mosque had left, except ʿUthman b. Mazʿun—one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ—and fifteen or sixteen men, not reaching seventeen. ʿUthman said, “I will not leave tonight until the Prophet ﷺ comes out, so that I may pray with him and learn what his matter is.” The Prophet ﷺ came out near the first third of the night, with Bilal, and he did not see anyone in the mosque when he heard the murmur of their speech in a corner of the mosque. He walked to them until he greeted them and said, “What keeps you sitting at this hour?” They said, “O Prophet of God, we waited for you to witness the prayer with you.” He said to them, “No nation before you has ever prayed this prayer of yours, and you have continued to be in prayer ever since.” And he said, “Indeed the stars are a safeguard for the sky; when the stars are effaced, what you are promised will come to the sky. I am a safeguard for my Companions; when I go, what my Companions are promised will come to them. My Companions are a safeguard for my nation; when my Companions go, what my nation is promised will come to it.”
