✧ We arrived with the Prophet ﷺ intending only Hajj, so we entered iḥrām for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulated on his mount, touching the corner with a staff he had with him. Then he turned to the watering place and said: “Draw some water for me from it.” They drew a bucket for him, and he took a sip, rinsed his mouth, then spat it back into the bucket and said: “Return it to the well.” Then he said: “O Banū Hāshim, you are engaged in a righteous work. Were it not that you would be overcome for it or it would be taken as a sunna, I would have taken part with you.” Then he went to his dwelling and addressed his companions, saying: “ʿUmra has entered into your Hajj, so release yourselves from iḥrām, except those who have a sacrificial animal with them.” And he said: “Were it not that I have a sacrificial animal with me, I would have released myself from iḥrām with you.” Surāqa b. Mālik stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours or forever?” He said: “Rather, forever.” They were pleased by whatever conformed to the practice of the people of the Jāhiliyya. The people of the Jāhiliyya used to say: when Ṣafar has passed, the fur has grown, and the wound has healed, then ʿUmra is lawful for the one performing ʿUmra.
