✧ I heard Malik say: Uthman ؓ was killed, and he lay cast aside on the rubbish heap of the Banu Fulān for three days. Then twelve men came to him, among them my grandfather Malik b. Abi Amir, Huwaytib b. Abd al-Uzza, Hakim b. Hizam, Abdullah b. al-Zubayr, and Aisha bt. Uthman, with a lamp inside a small box. They carried him on a door, and his head kept knocking against the door: tap, tap. Then they brought him to al-Baqi`, and they differed about praying over him, so Hakim b. Hizam or Huwaytib b. Abd al-Uzza prayed over him — Abd al-Rahman was unsure. Then they wanted to bury him, but a man from the Banu Mazin stood up and said: By Allah, if you bury him with the Muslims, I will tell the people. So they carried him until they brought him to the orchard of Kawkab. When they lowered him into his grave, Aisha bt. Uthman cried out, and Ibn al-Zubayr said to her: Be quiet, for by Allah, if you do it again, I will strike the part where your eyes are. When they had buried him and leveled the earth over him, Ibn al-Zubayr said to her: Cry now, as much as you want. Malik said: Before that, Uthman b. Affan ؓ used to pass by the orchard of Kawkab and say: A righteous man will surely be buried here. Abu al-Qasim said: al-hushsh means the garden.
