حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ الضَّحَّاكِ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ أنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الرَّحَبِيُّ ثنا سَهْمُ بْنُ حُبَيْشٍ وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ قَتْلَ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ
فَلَمَّا أَمْسَيْنَا قُلْتُ لَئِنْ تَرَكْتُمْ صَاحِبَكُمْ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ مَثَّلُوا بِهِ فَانْطَلِقُوا بِهِ إِلَى بَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ فَأَمْكَنَّا لَهُ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ حَمَلْنَاهُ وَغَشِيَنَا سَوَادٌ مِنْ خَلْفِنَا فَهِبْنَاهُمْ حَتَّى كِدْنَا أَنَّ نَتَفَرَّقَ عَنْهُ فَنَادَى مُنَادٍ لَا رَوْعَ عَلَيْكُمْ اثْبُتُوا فَإِنَّا قَدْ جِئْنَا لِنَشْهَدَهُ مَعَكُمْ وَكَانَ ابْنُ حُبَيْشٍ يَقُولُ هُمْ وَاللهِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ

✧ When evening came, I said: If you leave your companion until morning, they will mutilate him, so take him to Baqi al-Gharqad, and make it possible for us in the middle of the night. Then we carried him, and a blackness came over us from behind, and we feared them until we almost dispersed from around him. Then a caller called out: Do not be afraid; stand firm, for we have come to witness him with you. Ibn Hubaysh used to say: They were, by Allah, the angels.
