حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ
ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هُرْمُزَ أَنَّ نَجْدَةَ كَتَبَ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓماُ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ خَمْسِ خِلَالٍ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ لَوْلَا أَنْ أَكْتُمَ عِلْمًا لَمَا كَتَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ نَجْدَةُ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَأَخْبِرْنِي هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَغْزُو بِالنِّسَاءِ؟ وَهَلْ كَانَ يَضْرِبُ لَهُنَّ بِسَهْمٍ؟ وَهَلْ كَانَ يَقْتُلُ الصِّبْيَانَ؟ وَمَتَى يَنْقَطِعُ يُتِمُ الْيَتِيمِ؟ وَعَنِ الْخُمُسِ لِمَنْ هُوَ؟ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ كَتَبْتَ تَسْأَلُنِي هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَغْزُو بِالنِّسَاءِ؟ وَقَدْ كَانَ يَغْزُو بِهِنَّ فَيُدَاوِينَ الْجَرْحَى وَيُحْذَيْنَ مِنَ الْغَنِيمَةِ وَأَمَّا سَهْمٌ فَلَمْ يَضْرِبْ لَهُنَّ وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمْ يَقْتُلِ الصِّبْيَانَ وَكَتَبْتَ مَتَى يَنْقَضِي يُتْمُ الْيَتِيمِ؟ وَلَعَمْرِي إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشِبُ لِحْيَتُهُ وَإِنَّهُ لَضَعِيفُ الْأَخْذِ لِنَفْسِهِ ضَعِيفُ الْإِعْطَاءِ مِنْهَا فَإِذَا أَخَذَ لِنَفْسِهِ مِنْ أَصْلَحِ مَا يَأْخُذُ النَّاسُ فَقَدْ ذَهَبَ عَنْهُ الْيُتْمُ وَكَتَبْتَ تَسْأَلُنِي عَنِ الْخُمُسِ لِمَنْ هُوَ؟ فَإِنَّا نَقُولُ هُوَ لَنَا وَأَبَى عَلَيْنَا قَوْمُنَا ذَلِكَ

✧ Al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us; Sulaymān b. Bilāl narrated to us, from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, from his father, from Yazīd b. Hurmuz, that Najdah wrote to Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ asking him about five matters. Ibn ʿAbbās said: Were it not that I would be concealing knowledge, I would not write to him. Najdah wrote to him: To proceed: Inform me, did the Messenger of God ﷺ go on raids with women? Did he assign them a share? Did he kill children? When does the orphanhood of an orphan end? And about the fifth, to whom does it belong? Ibn ʿAbbās wrote to him: You wrote asking me: Did the Messenger of God ﷺ go on raids with women? He did go on raids with them, and they treated the wounded and were given gifts from the spoils. As for a share, he did not assign them one. The Messenger of God ﷺ did not kill children. You wrote: When does the orphanhood of an orphan end? By my life, a man's beard may grow while he is weak in taking for himself and weak in giving from it. When he takes for himself from what is best that people take, then orphanhood has gone from him. You wrote asking me about the fifth, to whom does it belong? We say it is for us, but our people refused us that.
