حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْعَلَّافُ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ رِشْدِينَ قَالَا ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا غَطَفَانَ بْنَ طَرِيفٍ الْمُرِّيَّ يَقُولُ
سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ صَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ يَوْمًا يُعَظِّمُهُ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا كَانَ عَامُ الْمُقْبِلِ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ صُمْنَا التَّاسِعَ» فَلَمْ يَأْتِ عَامُ الْمُقْبِلِ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and commanded fasting on it.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians venerate.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If the coming year comes, God willing, we will fast the ninth.” But the coming year did not arrive until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.
