✧ When the Haruriyya seceded and were in a separate abode on their own, I said to Ali: 'O Commander of the Faithful, delay the prayer a little so that perhaps I may go to these people and speak with them.' He said: 'I fear them for you.' I said: 'Not at all, if God wills.' So I put on the best Yemeni garment I could, then entered upon them while they were resting during midday. I entered upon a people more intense in worship than any I had ever seen. Their hands were like the calloused knees of camels, and their faces were marked from the traces of prostration. I entered and they said: 'Welcome, O Ibn Abbas. What brings you?' I said: 'I have come to tell you about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Revelation came down while they were more knowledgeable of its interpretation.' Some of them said: 'Do not speak to him,' while others said: 'We will certainly speak with him.' I said: 'Tell me what you hold against the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his son-in-law, the first to believe in him, and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who were with him?' They said: 'We hold three things against him.' I said: 'What are they?' They said: 'The first is that he appointed men as arbiters in the religion of God, while God has said: {Judgment belongs to none but God}.' I said: 'And what else?' They said: 'He fought but did not take captives or war spoils. If they were disbelievers, their wealth would be lawful to him; and if they were believers, their blood would be forbidden to him.' I said: 'And what else?' They said: 'He erased his own title as Commander of the Faithful. If he is not the Commander of the Faithful, then he is the commander of the disbelievers.' I said: 'Tell me, if I recite to you from the clear Book of God and narrate to you from the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ that which you cannot deny, will you return?' They said: 'Yes.' I said: 'As for your saying that he appointed men as arbiters in the religion of God, God says: {O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram} up to His saying: {two just men among you shall judge it}. And He said about a woman and her husband: {And if you fear a breach between them, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people}. I adjure you by God: is the judgment of men in the sparing of their blood and their lives and the rectification of their relations more worthy, or in a rabbit whose value is a quarter of a dirham?' They said: 'O God, in the sparing of their blood and the rectification of their relations.' He said: 'Have I answered this one?' They said: 'O God, yes.' 'As for your saying that he fought but did not take captives or war spoils: would you take your mother captive and make lawful from her what you make lawful from other women? If you claim she is not your mother, then you have disbelieved and left Islam. God, exalted is He, says: {The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers}. So you are wavering between two errors. Choose whichever you wish. Have I answered this one?' They said: 'O God, yes.' 'As for your saying that he erased his own title as Commander of the Faithful: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Quraysh on the day of Hudaybiyya to write a document between him and them. He said: "Write: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of God, has agreed upon." They said: "By God, if we knew that you were the Messenger of God, we would not have turned you away from the House nor fought you. But write: Muhammad b. Abd Allah." He said: "By God, I am indeed the Messenger of God even if you deny me. Write, O Ali, Muhammad b. Abd Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was superior to Ali. Have I answered this one?' They said: 'O God, yes.' Then twenty thousand of them returned, and four thousand remained and were killed.
