حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ أنا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
لَقَدْ قُلِّلُوا فِي أَعْيُنِنَا يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ حَتَّى قُلْتُ لِصَاحِبِي الَّذِي إِلَى جَانِبِي كَمْ تُرَاهُمْ؟ أَتُرَاهُمْ سَبْعِينَ؟ قَالَ أُرَاهُمْ مِائَةً حَتَّى أَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ رَجُلًا فَسَأَلْنَاهُ فَقَالَ كُنَّا أَلْفًا

✧ They were made to appear few in our eyes on the day of Badr, until I said to my companion beside me: “How many do you think they are? Do you think they are seventy?” He said: “I think they are a hundred.” Then we captured a man from them and asked him, and he said: “We were a thousand.”
