حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
جَلَسَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْكَعْبَةِ قُرَشِيَّانِ وَثَقَفِيٌّ أَوْ ثَقَفِيَّانِ وَقُرَشِيٌّ فَأَسَرَّ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ بِأَمْرٍ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ أَتَرَوْنَ اللهَ يَسْمَعُ مَا نَقُولُ؟ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَمَّا مَا جَهَرْنَا فَإِنَّهُ يَسْمَعُ وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ إِنْ كَانَ يَسْمَعُ مَا جَهَرْنَا بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْمَعُ مَا أَسْرَرْنَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى {وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ} الْآيَةَ

✧ Three persons sat at the gate of the Ka'bah: two Qurayshis and a Thaqafi, or two Thaqafis and a Qurayshi. Some of them whispered to others about a matter. One of them said, "Do you think Allah hears what we say?" Another said, "As for what we say aloud, He hears it." The third said, "If He hears what we say aloud, then He hears what we whisper." Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down: {And you were not covering yourselves} – the verse.
