حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَرَّاجٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ الْحَافِظُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْمَدِينِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا صَالِحُ بْنُ نُبَاتَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْمَأْمُونَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ:

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ يُحَاسِبْكُمْ بِهِ اللهُ شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَنَزَلَتْ فَيَغْفِرُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ، فَسُرِّيَ ذَلِكَ عَنْهُمْ

✧ When it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'And whether you disclose what is in your own selves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it,' this weighed heavily on the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then it was revealed: 'He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills,' and that relieved them.
