حَدَّثَنَا مَسْعَدَةُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ، حَدَّثَنِي خَالِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ أَبِي وَدَاعَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ. عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَتْ:
كَانَ النَّاسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْمُصَلِّي يُصَلِّي بِصَلَاتِهِ فَلَا يَعْدُو بَصَرُهُ مَوْضِعَ قَدَمَيْهِ، فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَكَانَ النَّاسُ إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُهُمْ يُصَلِّي لَا يَعْدُو بَصَرُهُ مَوْضِعَ جَنْبَيْهِ، وَتُوُفِّيَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ عُمَرُ، وَكَانَ النَّاسُ إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَا يَعْدُو بَصَرُهُ مَوْضِعَ الْقِبْلَةِ، وَكَانَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ، وَكَانَ النَّاسُ إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُهُمْ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا "

✧ The people at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: a praying person would pray following his prayer, and his gaze would not go beyond the place of his feet. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, and Abu Bakr became the leader, and when one of the people stood to pray, his gaze would not go beyond the place of his sides. Then Abu Bakr passed away and ʿUmar became the leader, and when one of them stood, his gaze would not go beyond the place of the qiblah. Then ʿUthman b. ʿAffān became the leader, and when one of them stood, he would not turn right or left in the prayer."
