✧ Abu Talhah came to Umm Sulaym—she is the mother of Anas, and Abu Talhah was his stepfather—and said: 'Do you have anything, O Umm Sulaym? I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was teaching Surah al-Nisa to the people of the Suffah, and he had tied a stone on his stomach from hunger.' She said: 'I had some barley.' She said: 'I ground it, then he sent me to the markets—the markets were their walled gardens—and I brought some firewood, and I made a loaf from it. Then he said: 'Do you have any condiment?' She said: 'I had a small skin of clarified butter, but I do not know whether anything remains in it.' She brought it and squeezed it. He said: 'The squeezing of two is more effective than the squeezing of one.' So they squeezed together and extracted the like of a date. He said: 'She spread it on the loaf, then he called me and said: 'O my son, do you know the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I left him with the people of the Suffah teaching them, so invite him, but do not invite anyone else with him. Be careful not to disgrace me.' So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he saw me, he said: 'Perhaps your father sent you to us?' I said: 'Yes.' He said to the people: 'Go.' They set off that day, and they were eighty men. He took me by the hand. When I drew near the house, I pulled my hand from his, then I went ahead until I reached him and told him the news. He began looking for me in the house and throwing stones at me, saying: 'You have disgraced me before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then he went out to him and told him the news. He said: 'It will not harm you.' He asked them to sit, then he entered, and we brought the loaf. He said: 'Is there any condiment?' Umm Sulaym said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we had a small skin of butter, and Abu Talhah and I squeezed it.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Bring it, for the squeezing of three is more effective than the squeezing of two.' It was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he squeezed it with them, and they extracted from it the like of a date. They wiped the loaf with it; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped it with his hand, then he supplicated for blessing in it, then he said: 'Invite ten at a time for me.' So I invited ten, and they sat and ate until they belched from fullness. They kept entering ten at a time until they were all full. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat, and we ate with him until there was some left over.
