وَبِهِ: قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِلَالٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ:

أُخْبِرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي أَقُولُ: لَأَصُومَنَّ الدَّهْرَ، وَلَأَقُومَنَّ اللَّيْلَ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: أَنْتَ الَّذِي يَقُولُ لَأَصُومَنَّ الدَّهْرَ وَلَأَقُومَنَّ اللَّيْلَ مَا عِشْتُ ؟ " قُلْتُ: قَدْ قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " إِنَّكَ لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ ذَلِكَ، فَأَفْطِرْ وَصُمْ، وَقُمْ وَنَمْ، وَصُمْ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، فَإِنَّ الْحَسَنَةَ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا، ذَلِكَ مِثْلُ صِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ "، قُلْتُ: إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " صُمْ يَوْمًا، وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا ذَلِكَ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ ﷺ، وَهُوَ أَعْدَلُ الصِّيَامِ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed that I said: 'I will certainly fast all time and stand in prayer all night.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Are you the one who says: I will certainly fast all time and stand in prayer all night as long as I live?' I said: 'I did say that, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to me: 'You will not be able to do that. So fast and break your fast, pray and sleep, and fast three days of the month, for a good deed is multiplied ten times; that is like fasting all time.' I said: 'I can do better than that.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Fast one day and break your fast one day; that is the fast of Dawud ﷺ, and it is the most balanced fasting.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I can do better than that.' He said: 'There is nothing better than that.'
