حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ: حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ: حَدَّثَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ، يَقُولُ:
أُمِّرَ عَلَيْنَا قَيْسُ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَصَابَتْنَا مَخْمَصَةٌ، فَنَحَرَ لَنَا سَبْعَ جَزَائِرَ، فَهَبَطْنَا سَاحِلَ الْبَحْرِ، فَإِذَا نَحْنُ بِأَعْظَمِ حُوتٍ، فَأَقَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا، وَحَمَلْنَا مِنْهُ مَا شِئْنَا مِنْ وَدَكٍ فِي الْأَسْقِيَةِ، وَالْغَرَائِرِ، وَسِرْنَا حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّا نُدْرِكُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرُوحَ أَحْبَبْنَا أَنْ لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدَنَا مِنْهُ

✧ Qays b. Saʿd b. ʿUbādah was appointed commander over us during the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ. We were struck by severe hunger, so he slaughtered seven fat camels for us. Then we descended to the seacoast, and suddenly we came upon a huge fish. We stayed by it for three days, and we loaded from it as much as we wished of its fat into waterskins and sacks. Then we traveled until we arrived before the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him about that. He said: "If we knew that we would reach it before it departs, we would have loved to have some of it with us."
