✧ A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me about lost property.' He said, 'Recognize its container and its tying cord, and announce it for a year. If its seeker comes, return it to him; otherwise, spend it.' He said, 'Then tell me about a stray sheep.' He said, 'Take it, for it is yours, or your brother's, or the wolf's.' He said, 'Then tell me about a stray camel.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry until his cheeks reddened, then said, 'What do you have to do with it? It has its own shoes and its own water-skin; it goes to water and eats from trees. Leave it until its owner comes to it.'

machine translationRabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrates it, and there is disagreement concerning him about it, from Yazīd, the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Layth b. Saʿd contradicted him and said: "Someone with whom I am satisfied narrated to me, from Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah, from Rabīʿah and others, from the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from a man from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is from Rabīʿah, from Yazīd, the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from Zayd b. Khālid al-Juhanī, from the Prophet ﷺ.
