✧ I was sitting beside Ibn 'Umar when a man came to him and said, "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, tell me about 'Uthman: did he witness Badr?" He said, "No." He said, "Did he witness the Pledge of al-Ridwan?" He said, "No." He said, "Was he among those who turned away on the day the two armies met?" He said, "Yes." The man turned away. Then another man said to 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar, "This man will now go and tell people that you have disparaged 'Uthman." He said, "Did I do that?" He said, "That is what he claims." So he said, "Bring the man back to me." They brought him back, and he said, "Do you know what I said to you?" The man said, "I asked you: Did 'Uthman witness Badr? You said no. I asked you: Did he witness the Pledge of al-Ridwan? You said no. I asked you: Was he among those who turned away on the day the two armies met? You said yes." Then 'Abd Allah said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said on the day of Badr: "'Uthman has been detained in the service of God and His Messenger," and the Messenger of God ﷺ allotted a share for him, and he did not allot a share for anyone else who was absent. And on the day of the Pledge of al-Ridwan, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent 'Uthman to Makkah to seek permission from them regarding the sacrificial animals and entering Makkah. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ took the Pledge of al-Ridwan while he intended to enter Makkah, and he said: "'Uthman is in the service of God and His Messenger, so I pledge God on his behalf," and he struck one of his hands upon the other. And God said: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, but God has already pardoned them." So go, for God has pardoned. Now go and do your utmost against me.
