✧ We were with Umar b. al-Khattab, between Makkah and Madinah, and I had sharp eyesight. We looked for the new moon, and no one saw it except me. I began to say: 'Yes, don't you see it?' Then Umar said: 'I will see it while reclining on my bed.' Then he began to tell us about the people of Badr, and said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ showed us the places where the people of Badr would be slain the day before, saying: "This is the place where so-and-so will be slain tomorrow, and this is the place where so-and-so will be slain tomorrow, God willing."' Then Umar said: 'By the One who sent him with the truth, they did not miss the boundaries that the Messenger of God ﷺ had set.' He said: 'They were thrown into a well, one on top of another.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ went until he reached them and said: "O so-and-so son of so-and-so, and O so-and-so son of so-and-so, did you find what God and His Messenger promised you to be true? For I have found what God promised me to be true."' Umar said: 'O Messenger of God, how do you speak to bodies with no souls?' He said: 'You are not more able to hear what I say than they are, except that they cannot reply at all.'
