✧ Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq wrote to ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: "Peace be upon you. To proceed: Your letter has reached me, mentioning what the Romans have gathered of troops. Allah did not grant us victory alongside His Prophet ﷺ by numerous numbers or by numerous soldiers. We used to raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we had only a few small horses, and we would but take turns riding the camels. On the day of Uḥud we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we had only one horse, which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode. He would grant us victory and aid us against those who opposed us. Know, O ʿAmr, that the most obedient of people to Allah are those with the strongest hatred for sins. So obey Allah, and command your companions to obey Him."
