حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، ثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الْيَمَامِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ ثَقُلَتْ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَعْظَمُوا أَنْ يُقَاتِلَ عِشْرُونَ مِائَتَيْنِ وَمِائَةٌ أَلْفًا، فَخَفَّفَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ، فَنَسَخَهَا بِالْآيَةِ الَّتِي بَعْدَهَا "، الآنَ خَفَّفَ اللهُ عَنْكُمْ وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ فِيكُمْ ضَعْفًا فَإِنْ يَكُنْ مِنْكُمْ مِائَةٌ صَابِرَةٌ يَغْلِبُوا مِائَتَيْنِ وَإِنْ يَكُنْ مِنْكُمْ أَلْفٌ يَغْلِبُوا أَلْفَيْنِ بِإِذْنِ اللهِ

Translation

✧ When this verse was revealed, it weighed heavily on the Muslims, and they deemed it grave that twenty should fight two hundred and a hundred should fight a thousand. So Allah lightened it for them and abrogated it with the verse after it: "Now Allah has lightened [your burden] for you, and He knows that there is weakness in you. So if there are among you one hundred steadfast, they will overcome two hundred; and if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by Allah's permission."
