حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، نَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ - أَخُو أَبِي حُرَّةَ - حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو حُرَّةَ. عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَّادٍ قَالَ:

أَقَمْتُ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، وَمَشْيَخَةُ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَعَهُ، فَأَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ قُدَّامَ الصَّفِّ يَنْظُرُ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِإِزَائِي دَحَانِي دَحْيَةً وَقَامَ فِي مَقَامِي، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ عُمَرُ قَالَ: " سَاءَكَ مَا صَنَعْتُ بِكَ ؟ " قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: إِنَّا كُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ بِالصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ، فَنَظَرْتُ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَلَمْ أُنْكِرْ أَحَدًا غَيْرَكَ " فَقُلْتُ: مَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا: أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ ".

✧ I stood for prayer with Umar b. al-Khattab, and the elders among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were with him. A man came in front of the row, looking at the faces of the people, until when he was opposite me, he nudged me hard and stood in my place. When Umar said the salam, he asked: "Did what I did to you upset you?" I said: "Yes." He said: "We used to be commanded to take the first row, so I looked at the faces of the people and did not disapprove of anyone except you." I said: "Who is this?" They said: "Ubayy b. Ka'b."
