✧ Forty of the companions of the Negus came to the Prophet ﷺ and fought with him at Uhud. They had wounds among them, but none of them was killed. When they saw the need of the believers, they said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are people of means. Permit us to bring our wealth and console the Muslims with it.' So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning them: 'Those to whom We gave the Book before it—they believe in it' (Q 28:52) up to: 'Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured' (Q 28:54). He made for them two rewards. He said: 'And they repel evil with good' (Q 28:54), meaning the spending with which they consoled the Muslims, until this verse was revealed. He said: 'Then the People of the Book boasted over the Muslims until this verse was revealed. They said: "O assembly of Muslims, whoever of us believes in your Book will have two rewards, and whoever does not believe in your Book will have one reward like your rewards." So Allah revealed: "O you who believe, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk" (Q 57:28), giving them the light and forgiveness.' He said: 'Lest the People of the Book know that they have no power over anything of Allah's bounty.'
