✧ I was in Syria, and Abu Umamah Sudayy b. 'Ajlan, the companion of the Prophet ﷺ, was there, and he was a friend of mine. Some heads of the Haruriyyah were brought and thrown on the steps. Abu Umamah came, entered the mosque, prayed two rak'ahs, then turned toward the heads. I said: 'I will follow him until I hear what he says.' I followed him until he stood over them and wept. Then he said: 'Glory be to Allah! What is Iblis doing to this ummah?' Then he said: 'Dogs of the Fire, dogs of the Fire, dogs of the Fire.' Then he said: 'The worst of those killed who were killed under the shade of the sky, and the best of those killed are those who killed them.' Then he recited this verse: 'On the Day when some faces will be white and some faces black; as for those whose faces turn black, "Did you disbelieve after your belief?"' (Q 3:106). Then he turned to me and saw me. Abu Ghalib said: 'He took me by my forearm' and said: 'You are in a land where these are many?'—meaning Iraq. I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'May Allah protect you from being one of them.' I said: 'O Abu Umamah, do you think your saying "dogs of the Fire" was your own opinion, or something you heard?' He said: 'Glory be to Allah! I would then be bold. No, I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not once, not twice, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven.'
