✧ The people suffered drought in the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Muslims came to him and said, 'O Messenger of God, the rain has ceased, the trees have dried up, the livestock have perished, and the people are afflicted with famine. Ask your Lord to send us rain.' He said, 'On such-and-such a day, go out and bring your charities with you.' When that day came, the Messenger of God ﷺ and the people went out, walking with tranquility and dignity until they reached the prayer place. The Prophet ﷺ advanced and led them in two rak'ahs, reciting aloud. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to recite in the two Eid prayers and the rain prayer in the first rak'ah the Opening of the Book and 'Sabbih isma rabbika al-a'la' [Quran 87], and in the second rak'ah the Opening of the Book and 'Hal ataka hadith al-ghashiyah' [Quran 88]. When he finished his prayer, he faced the people, turned his cloak inside out, then knelt on his knees, raised his hands, and said the takbir once before supplicating for rain. Then he said, 'O God, give us water and succor us. O God, give us rain—a succoring, ample, spring-like, intense, torrential, covering, abundant, wholesome, pleasant, fertile, pasturing, heavy, all-encompassing, pouring, enveloping, continuous, flowing, beneficial, not harmful, swift, not delayed, rain. O God, by it revive the lands, succor the servants, and make it a provision for the present among us and the traveler. O God, send down upon our land its adornment, and send down upon our land its inhabitants. O God, send down upon us from the sky purifying water, and revive thereby a dead land, and give drink from what You have created for us—many cattle and people.'" He said: They did not depart until small clouds approached, joined together, and then it rained upon them for seven days and their nights, not ceasing over Madinah. The Muslims came to him and said, 'O Messenger of God, the land has been flooded, the houses have collapsed, and the roads have been cut off. Pray to God to turn it away from us.' He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed while he was on the pulpit until his molars appeared, in amazement at how quickly the children of Adam become weary. Then he said, 'O God, around us and not upon us. O God, upon the tops of the hills, the places where trees grow, the bellies of the valleys, and the backs of the high grounds.' He said: It dispersed from Madinah, and it rained in the surrounding pastures like a shield, while not a drop fell in the city.
