✧ While we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ, there appeared to us some camels with their milk retained, taking shelter by the trees, with no herdsman with them. Some of us said, "If only we got up and milked them." Others said, "How can we milk them while the Messenger of God ﷺ is among us and we have not consulted him?" Then some of us said, "He has remained silent, and his silence is permission." So we got up to them, but he called us and said, "What do you think if a people came to you while you were asleep and took what was in your provision bags—would they have harmed you?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Indeed, what is in the udders of these camels is like what is in your provision bags." We said, "O Messenger of God, what is lawful for a man from his brother's wealth if he is in need of it?" He said, "He may eat but not carry away, and drink but not carry away."
