✧ We were discussing righteousness with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he began to narrate to us. He said: Among the nations before you there was a devout man, an inhabitant of a hermitage, called Jurayj. He had a woman—or a mother—who used to come to him and call him, and he would look over at her and speak to her. One day she came to him while he was in his prayer, facing it. She called him—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ imitated her, placing his hand on his forehead—and she kept calling him, raising her head toward him and placing her hand on her forehead: 'O Jurayj, O Jurayj,' three times, each time three calls. Each time Jurayj said: 'O Lord, my mother or my prayer?' She became angry and said: 'O Allah, do not let Jurayj die until he looks into the faces of prostitutes.' He said: The daughter of the king of the village became pregnant and gave birth to a boy. They said to her: 'Who did this to you? Who is your companion?' She said: 'He is the inhabitant of the hermitage, Jurayj.' Jurayj was unaware until he heard the sound of axes at the base of his hermitage. He began asking them: 'Woe to you, what is the matter with you?' But they did not answer him. When he saw that, he took a rope and lowered himself down. They began pulling his nose and beating him, saying: 'Hypocrite, deceiving people with your deeds!' He said: 'Woe to you, what is the matter with you?' They said: 'What about the daughter of the chief of the village, the king's daughter whom you made pregnant?' He said: 'What did she do?' They said: 'She gave birth to a boy.' He said: 'Is the boy alive?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Turn away from me.' He turned away, prayed two rak'ahs, then walked to a tree and took a branch from it. Then he came to the boy in his cradle and struck him with that branch, saying: 'O tyrant, who is your father?' He said: 'My father is so-and-so the shepherd.' They said: 'If you wish, we will rebuild your hermitage with gold, and if you wish, with silver.' He said: 'Restore it as it was.' Abu Harb claimed that none spoke in the cradle except three: Isa son of Maryam, the witness of Yusuf, and the companion of Jurayj.
