✧ He and a companion of his came to 'A'ishah looking for the Prophet ﷺ, but did not find him. 'A'ishah fed us a lunch of dates and 'asidah. It was not long before the Prophet ﷺ came, walking with a slight limp, swaying. He said: "Have you two eaten?" We said: "Yes." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, the prayer?" He said: "Perform ablution thoroughly, run your fingers through your fingers, and exaggerate in sniffing water into the nose unless you are fasting." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife"—and he mentioned her vulgarity—he said: "Divorce her." I said: "She has been my companion and has children." He said: "Admonish her; if there is any good in her, she will do it. Do not strike your wife as you strike your slave-girl." While we were like that, a shepherd raised a newborn lamb in his hands in the sheep pen. He said: "Has it given birth?" He said: "Yes." He said: "What?" He said: "A female lamb." He said: "Slaughter a sheep in its place." Then he turned to me and said: "Do not think—and he did not say, 'Do not think'—that we slaughtered it only for your sake. We have a hundred sheep; we do not like to increase beyond that. When the shepherd delivers a female lamb, we order him to slaughter a sheep in its place."
