حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ قُهْزَاذَ، نَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْجُلَّابُ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ:

فَشَتْ أُمُورٌ قَبِيحَةٌ فِي الْكُوفَةِ، فَاجْتَمَعَ قُرَّاءُ الْكُوفَةِ، فَخَرَجُوا إِلَى عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: مَا الَّذِي صَنَعْتُ حَتَّى سَارَ إِلَيَّ قُرَّاءُ الْكُوفَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو: فَشَتْ فِيهِمْ أُمُورٌ قَبِيحَةٌ. فَقَالَ: نَشَدْتُكَ اللهَ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو، أَتُطِيعُ اللهَ فِيمَا أُمِرْتَ مِنْ أَمْرِ سَمْعِكَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: فَفِي أَمْرِ بَصَرِكَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: فَكَيْفَ أُقِيمُ أَمْرَ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ عَلَى مَا لَا تَسْتَقِيمُ لِي عَلَيْهِ أَنْتَ فِي أَمْرِ سَمْعِكَ وَبَصَرِكَ ؟ إِنَّمَا لَنَا مِنَ النَّاسِ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ، وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ، فَإِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ عَصَمُوا مِنِّي دِمَاءَهُمْ، وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ، إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا، وَحِسَابُهُمْ عَلَى اللهِ

✧ Ugly matters spread in Kufa, so the reciters of Kufa gathered and went out to Umar. Umar said: 'What have I done that the reciters of Kufa have come to me?' Abdullah b. Amr said: 'Ugly matters spread among them.' He said: 'I adjure you by God, O Abdullah b. Amr, do you obey God in what you are commanded regarding your hearing?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then regarding your sight?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then how can I establish the affairs of the nation of Muhammad ﷺ on what you yourself cannot remain upright in regarding your hearing and sight? We have from people only what the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I have been commanded to fight people until they say 'there is no god but God' and establish prayer and give zakat. If they do that, they protect from me their blood and wealth, except by its right, and their reckoning is with God."
