حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ابْنُ الْإِمَامِ، نَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الشَّاعِرُ، نَا سَهْلُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ أَبُو عَتَّابٍ الدَّلَّالُ، نَا سَعَّادُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَوْنُ بْنُ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ
أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ فَدَعَا بِسَيْفِهِ، فَأَخْرَجَ مِنْ بَطْنِ السَّيْفِ أَدِيمًا عَرَبِيًّا، فَقَالَ: مَا تَرَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَنَا شَيْئًا غَيْرَ كِتَابِ اللهِ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ إِلَّا وَقَدْ بَلَّغْتُهُ غَيْرَ هَذَا، فَأَقْرَأَهُ فَإِذَا فِيهِ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَرَمٌ، وَحَرَمِي الْمَدِينَةُ، فَمَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِيهَا حَدَثًا أَوْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا، فَلَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ مِنْهُ صَرْفًا وَلَا عَدْلًا

✧ He entered upon 'Ali, who called for his sword and brought out from inside the sword a piece of Arabian leather. He said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ did not leave with us anything other than the Book of God that was revealed except that I have conveyed it—except this." He read it, and in it was: "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Muhammad is the Messenger of God ﷺ. Every prophet has a sanctuary, and my sanctuary is Madinah. Whoever introduces an innovation therein or harbors an innovator, God will not accept from him any obligatory or supererogatory act."
