✧ While I was traveling along the outskirts of Badr, a man emerged from a pit with a chain around his neck. He called out to me: “O servant of Allah, give me water! O servant of Allah, give me water!” I do not know whether he knew my name or called me by the Arabs’ generic address. Then a black man came out from that pit holding a whip. He called to me: “O servant of Allah, do not give him water, for he is a disbeliever.” Then he struck him with the whip until he returned to his pit. I came to the Prophet ﷺ in haste and informed him. He said to me: “Did you see him?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “That was the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl b. Hisham, and that is his punishment until the Day of Resurrection.”
