حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَنِيفَةَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ الْعِجْلِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، قَالَ: نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ذَكْوَانَ، خَالُ وَلَدِ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ:
إِنَّا لَقُعُودٌ بِفِنَاءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، إِذْ مَرَّتِ امْرَأَةٌ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ: هَذِهِ بِنْتُ مُحَمَّدٍ، فَقَالَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ: إِنَّ مَثَلَ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي بَنِي هَاشِمٍ كَمَثَلِ الرَّيْحَانَةِ، وَسَطَ النَّتْنِ، أَوْ قَالَ: التِّبْنِ، فَانْطَلَقَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ، فَخَرَجَ وَيُعْرَفُ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْغَضَبُ، فَقَالَ: مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يُؤْذُونَنِي فِي أَهْلِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " إِنَّ اللهَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ سَبْعًا، فَاخْتَارَ الْعُلْيَا فَسَكَنَهَا، وَأَسْكَنَ سَائِرَ سَمَاوَاتِهِ مَنْ شَاءَ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ، وَخَلَقَ الْأَرَضِينَ سَبْعًا، فَاخْتَارَ الْعُلْيَا وَأَسْكَنَهَا مَنْ شَاءَ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ، ثُمَّ خَلَقَ الْخَلْقَ، وَاخْتَارَ مِنَ الْخَلْقِ بَنِي آدَمَ، فَاخْتَارَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ الْعَرَبَ، وَاخْتَارَ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ مُضَرَ، وَاخْتَارَ مِنْ مُضَرَ قُرَيْشًا، وَاخْتَارَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، وَاخْتَارَنِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، فَأَنَا مِنْ خِيَارٍ إِلَى خِيَارٍ، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ الْعَرَبَ فَلِحُبِّي أَكْرَمَهُمْ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَ الْعَرَبَ فَلِبُغْضِي أَبْغَضَهُمْ

✧ While we were sitting in the courtyard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a woman passed by. Some of the people said, “This is the daughter of Muhammad.” Abu Sufyan said, “The example of Muhammad among the Banu Hashim is like a fragrant herb in the midst of stench,” or he said, “straw.” The woman went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He came out with anger recognizable on his face and said, “What is the matter with people who harm me concerning my family?” Then he said, “Allah created the seven heavens and chose the highest one, so He dwelt therein, and He settled the rest of His heavens with whomever He willed of His creation. And He created the seven earths and chose the highest one, and He settled therein whomever He willed of His creation. Then He created creation, and He chose from creation the Children of Adam, and He chose from the Children of Adam the Arabs, and He chose from the Arabs Mudar, and He chose from Mudar Quraysh, and He chose from Quraysh the Banu Hashim, and He chose me from the Banu Hashim. Thus I am from the best to the best. Whoever loves the Arabs, it is out of love for me that he honors them; and whoever hates the Arabs, it is out of hatred for me that he hates them.”
