✧ I witnessed Qays b. ʿAsim while he was giving his last instructions. He gathered his sons, and they were thirty-two males, and said: “O my sons, when I die, appoint your eldest as your leader, and you will succeed your father. Do not appoint your youngest, lest that bring you low in the eyes of your peers. Do not set up a wailing woman over me, for I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid wailing. Attend to improving wealth, for it ennobles the generous and makes one independent of the vile. Give the necks of the camels only in their due right, and do not withhold them from their right. Beware of every vein of evil, for whatever day pleases you, what displeases you is more. Beware of the sons of your enemies, for they are enemies to you on the path of their fathers. When I die, bury me in a place where the people of this quarter of Bakr b. Waʾil cannot see me, for there were scratches between me and them in the pre-Islamic era, and I fear they might dig me up from my grave, and you would spoil their worldly life, and they would spoil your hereafter.” Then he called for his quiver and ordered his eldest son, who was named ʿAli, and said: “Take out an arrow from my quiver.” He took it out, and he said: “Break it.” He broke it. Then he said: “Take out two arrows.” He took them out, and he said: “Break them.” He broke them. He said: “Take out three arrows.” He took them out, and he said: “Bind them with a bowstring.” He bound them. Then he said: “Break them.” He could not break them. So he said: “O my sons, thus are you in unity, and thus are you in division.” Then he began to recite: “Glory is only what the truthful father built, and the offspring revived his deeds. Glory suffices, along with courage and forbearance, when chastity and generosity adorn them. And thirty, O my sons, when they are bound by covenants for calamities, are like thirty arrows when a strong binding for provision ties them: they do not break. But if the arrows scatter, dispersal destroys their gathering. The elders and those of manly virtue are more deserving, if their like are to be made leaders. Upon them is the care of the young until the youngest reaches the age of accountability, striving.”
