✧ I heard Muhammad b. Sirin, when a man asked him about forgetfulness in prayer, say: Abu Hurayrah narrated to us that he prayed with the Messenger of God ﷺ one of the daytime prayers, and that he prayed two rakʿahs then said the salutation. The quickest of the people left, and they said: 'O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened?' Among the people were Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, but they were too awed to speak to him. A man among the Muslims said: 'O Messenger of God, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?' He said: 'It has not been shortened, and I have not forgotten.' A man said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, you forgot. You only prayed two rakʿahs.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Is what Dhu al-Yadayn says true?' They said: 'He has spoken the truth, O Messenger of God.' He then stood up and prayed two more rakʿahs in addition to the first two, then said the salutation, then prostrated twice, similar to his prostration in the prayer or longer.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
