✧ The son of Abdullah b. Ubayy, his father said to him: O my son, seek a garment from the garments of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and shroud me in it, and ask him to pray over me. So he came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, you know the nobility of Abdullah, and he asks you for a garment from your garments to shroud him in it, and for you to pray over him. He said: So he gave him a garment from his garments and intended to pray over him. Umar b. al-Khattab said to him: Do you not know Abdullah and his hypocrisy? You pray over him while Allah has forbidden you to pray over him? He said: Where? He said: "Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them." He said: Then I will increase beyond seventy. Then Allah revealed: "And do not pray over any of them who has died ever, and do not stand at his grave." He said: And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "It is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them" - the verse. He said: And a man entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and prolonged his sitting. The Prophet ﷺ went out three times so that he would stand and follow him, but he did not. Then Umar entered and saw the man and recognized in the face of the Prophet ﷺ dislike of his sitting. He said: Perhaps you have annoyed the Prophet ﷺ. The man understood and stood up. The Prophet ﷺ said: I stood up three times so that he would follow me, but he did not. Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, if only you would take a screen, for your wives are not like other women, and that is purer for their hearts. Then Allah revealed: "O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, without awaiting its readiness" - the verse. So he sent to Umar and informed him of that. He said: And the Prophet ﷺ consulted Abu Bakr and Umar about the captives of the people of Badr. Abu Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, spare your people and take ransom, and seek help through it. Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, kill them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you two agreed, you would not be disobeyed. Then he adopted the view of Abu Bakr. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made slaughter in the land." He said: And when it was revealed: "And We created man from an extract of clay, then We placed him as a drop in a firm lodging" - the verse, Umar said: Blessed is Allah, the best of creators. Then it was revealed: "So blessed is Allah, the best of creators."
