✧ By Allah, I have not gathered you out of desire for a hadith nor out of fear, except for a hadith narrated to me by Tamīm al-Dārī. He came to me, embraced Islam, and pledged allegiance. He informed me that he embarked on a ship with thirty men from Lakhm and Judhām—two tribes of the Arabs from the people of Yemen. They encountered the sea when it was raging, and the waves tossed them about for a month, then cast them near sunset onto an island of the islands of the sea. He said: There we were, and suddenly we came upon a hairy beast, whose front we could not distinguish from its back. We said: Who are you, O beast? Allah permitted it, so it spoke to us with a fluent, articulate tongue, saying: I am al-Jassāsah (the Spy). We said: What is al-Jassāsah? It said: Away from me; go to that monastery at the far end of the island, for in it is a man who longs for news of you. So we went to the monastery, and there we saw a man, the largest man I have ever seen in creation and the most massive in body. His right eye was obliterated, as if his eye were a grape on a plastered wall. His hands were chained to his neck, and his legs were bound with fetters from his knees to his feet. We said to him: Who are you, O man? He said: As for my story, you have now come to know it, so tell me about yours. What brought you to this island? No human has reached this island since I was placed here. Then he said to us: Tell me about the Lake of Tiberias, what has become of it? We said to him: About which of its affairs do you ask? He said: Has its water dried up? Have the wonders within it appeared? We said: No, by Allah. He said: Indeed, it will be. Then he fell silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the spring of Zughar, what has become of it? We said: About which of its affairs do you ask? He said: Do its people cultivate around it? We said: Yes. He said: Its water will soon disappear, and its people will no longer cultivate around it. Then he fell silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the date palms of Baysān, what has become of them? We said: About which of their affairs do you ask? He said: Do they bear fruit? We said: Yes. He said: They will no longer bear fruit. Then he fell silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the unlettered Prophet, what has he done? We said: About which of his affairs do you ask? He said: Has he appeared? We said: Yes. He said: What have the Arabs done with him? We said: Some of them fought him, and some of them believed him. He said: Indeed, whoever believed him, it is better for him—three times. We said: Tell us your story, O man. He said: Do you not know me? We said: If we knew you, we would not have asked you. He said: I am the Dajjāl (the Antichrist). It is near that I will be permitted to come out. When I come out, I will tread the entire land of the Arabs except Makkah and Ṭaybah. Every time I want them, an angel meets me with a drawn sword in his hand and turns me back from them. Abū al-Ashhab said: ʿĀmir said: Fāṭimah said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising his hands until I saw the whiteness of his armpits, then he said: 'Shall I not inform you? This is Ṭaybah'—three times. Then he said: 'Shall I not inform you that he is in the sea of Syria?' Then he fainted for a while, then recovered, then said: 'Rather, he is in the sea of Yemen.' Then he fainted for a while, then recovered, and said: 'He is in the sea of Iraq'—three times. He will emerge when he emerges from a town called Iṣfahān, from one of its villages called Rustuqbād. He will emerge with seventy thousand in his vanguard, wearing the sijān. With him are two rivers: a river of water and a river of fire. Whoever of you reaches that, and it is said to him: Enter the water, let him not enter it, for it is fire. And when it is said to him: Enter the fire, let him enter it, for it is water. No one narrated this hadith from Abū al-Ashhab except Sayf b. Miskīn, and Abū ʿUbaydah was alone in narrating it.
