حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ قَالَ: نَا سَوَّارُ بْنُ عُمَارَةَ الرَّمْلِيُّ قَالَ: نَا مَسَرَّةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ اللَّخْمِيُّ قَالَ:
صَلَّى بِنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ الْعَصْرَ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ إِلَيْنَا بَعْدَ سَلَامِهِ، فَأَعْلَمَنَا أَنَّهُ صَلَّى وَرَاءَ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، فَسَجَدَ بِنَا مِثْلَ هَاتَيْنِ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ مَرْوَانُ: إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ وَرَاءَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، فَسَجَدَ بِنَا مِثْلَ هَاتَيْنِ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: إِنِّي كُنْتُ عِنْدَ نَبِيِّكُمْ ﷺ، فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ فَلَمْ أَدْرِ أَشَفَعْتُ أَمْ أَوْتَرْتُ، ثُمَّ صَلَّيْتُ فَلَمْ أَدْرِ أَشَفَعْتُ أَمْ أَوْتَرْتُ ثَلَاثًا يَقُولُهَا، فَأَجَابَهُ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: يَتَلَاعَبُ بِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فِي صَلَاتِكُمْ، فَمَنْ صَلَّى فَلَمْ يَدْرِ أَشَفَعَ أَمْ أَوْتَرَ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ، فَإِنَّهُمَا تَمَامُ صَلَاتِهِ
Translation

✧ Yazid b. Abi Kabshah led us in the afternoon prayer, then turned to us after his salam and informed us that he had prayed behind Marwan b. al-Hakam, and he prostrated with us two prostrations like these. Then Marwan said: I prayed behind Uthman b. Affan, and he prostrated with us two prostrations like these. Then Uthman said: I was with your Prophet ﷺ when a man came to him and said: O Prophet of Allah, I prayed but did not know whether I prayed an even or odd number; then I prayed again and did not know whether I prayed an even or odd number—he said it three times. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ answered him, saying: Satan toys with you in your prayers. Whoever prays and does not know whether he prayed even or odd should prostrate twice, for they complete his prayer.
