✧ I was the tenth of ten in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Jabal, Hudhayfah, Ibn Awf, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and myself. A young man from the Ansar came, greeted, then sat down and said: O Messenger of Allah, which of the believers is best? He said: "The one with the best character among them." He said: Which of the believers is most astute? He said: "The one who remembers death most and prepares for it best before it descends upon him—those are the astute ones." Then the young man fell silent, and the Prophet ﷺ turned to us and said: O company of Muhajirun, five traits—if you are tested with them and they befall you, and I seek refuge in Allah that you should live to see them: immorality never appears among a people to the point that they practice it openly except that plague and diseases that were not present among their predecessors who came before them spread among them; and they do not diminish the measure and the balance except that they are seized with years of drought, hardship of provision, and the tyranny of the ruler over them; and they do not withhold the zakah of their wealth except that rain is withheld from the sky, and were it not for the animals they would not receive rain; and they do not break the covenant of Allah and His Messenger except that Allah sets their enemy upon them, who then raids them and seizes some of what was in their hands; and as long as they do not judge by the Book of Allah, Allah will make their might turn against one another. Then he ordered Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, who equipped himself for a military expedition to which he was assigned as commander. In the morning he had wrapped his head with a black cotton turban. The Prophet ﷺ came to him, then undid it, and re-wrapped it for him, leaving about four fingers or so hanging from behind, and said: "Wrap it like this, O Ibn Awf, for it is more proper and more handsome." Then he ordered Bilal, and handed him the banner. He praised Allah and invoked blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then said: "Take it, Ibn Awf, and go forth together in the path of Allah. Fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not act treacherously, and do not mutilate. This is the covenant of Allah and the practice of your Prophet among you."
