✧ Three men from a group set out, and rain overtook them, so they took refuge in a cave. While they were in it, a boulder from the heart of the mountain rolled down until it sealed the cave. The people said to one another: “The rain has stopped, the trace has been erased, and no one has seen you except God. Let each man among you consider the best deed he has ever done, mention it, and then supplicate God.” One of them said: “O God, if You know that I was dutiful to my parents, and that I used to bring them their evening drink and give it to them, and that one night I came to them with their evening drink but found that they had gone to their beds and fallen asleep, and I disliked waking them from their sleep, and I disliked returning with their evening drink before giving it to them, and that remained my habit and theirs until dawn broke—if You know that only fear of You carried me to do that, then open a way for us.” He said: It opened until the light entered upon them. The second said: “O God, I sought a woman and desired her, and I spent my wealth on her until when I had won her and sat from her as a man sits from a woman, she said to me: ‘It is not lawful for you to break my seal except by its right.’ So I got up and left her. If You know that only fear of You carried me to do that, then open a way for us.” The boulder tilted and opened until, had the people wished to leave, they could have left. The third said: “O God, You know that I hired laborers, and they did work for me, and I paid them their wages except for one man who left his wage until it multiplied many times over. He came afterward and demanded his wage. I said to him: ‘Take all that is before you, the full amount of your wage.’ If You know that fear of You carried me to do that, then open a way for us.” He said: The boulder tilted and rolled away, and they departed embracing one another.
