حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ قَالَ: نَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ:
حَضَرْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، وَهُمَا يَخْتَصِمَانِ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي مِيرَاثِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ النَّاسُ: اقْضِ بَيْنَهُمَا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ فِي كِتَابِهِ: سَبَّحَ لِلهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ فَقَرَأَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ: " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَضَعُهَا فِي الْمَسَاكِينِ، وَالْيَتَامَى، وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ، وَفِي ضَيْفِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَفَوَارِسِهِ " حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَوَلِيَهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ وُلِّيتُهَا أَنَا، فَوَضَعْتُهَا حَيْثُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَضَعُهَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُوَلِّيَكَهَا يَا عَلِيُّ، فَضَعْهَا حَيْثُ رَأَيْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَضَعُهَا، وَحَيْثُ رَأَيْتَنِي أَضَعُهَا

✧ I was present with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib while they were presenting their dispute to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb concerning the inheritance of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The people said: Judge between them, O Commander of the Believers. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: God Almighty says in His Book: Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies God, and He is the Mighty, the Wise, and he recited until His words: And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it. Then he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ used to place it among the poor, the orphans, the wayfarer, the guests of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and his horsemen until the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away. Abū Bakr then took charge of it, and then I took charge of it, and I placed it where the Messenger of God ﷺ used to place it and where Abū Bakr did. Now it has occurred to me to entrust it to you, O ʿAlī, so place it where you saw the Messenger of God ﷺ place it and where you saw me place it.
