✧ I asked Saʿīd b. Jubayr about this verse: “And married women” (Q 4:24). He said: “I have no knowledge of it.” Then I asked al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim, and I mentioned to him the statement of Saʿīd b. Jubayr. He said: “I bear witness that I heard him ask Ibn ʿAbbās about it, and Ibn ʿAbbās said: ‘It was revealed on the day of Khaybar. When the Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Khaybar, the Muslims acquired women from among the women of the People of the Book who had husbands. When a man wanted to have intercourse with one of them, she would say: “I have a husband.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ was asked about that, and this verse was revealed: “And married women” – the verse – meaning: and the captives from the polytheists who are acquired, there is no harm in that.’ So I mentioned that to Saʿīd b. Jubayr, and he said: ‘Al-Ḍaḥḥāk has spoken the truth.’”
