حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: نَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: نَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ حَصِيرَةَ، عَنْ صَخْرِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْحَمِقِ، يَقُولُ:

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِسَرِيَّةٍ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّكَ تَبْعَثُنَا وَلَيْسَ لَنَا زَادٌ، وَلَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ، وَلَا عِلْمَ لَنَا بِالطَّرِيقِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمْ سَتَمُرُّونَ بِرَجُلٍ صَبِيحِ الْوَجْهِ، يُطْعِمُكُمْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ، وَيَسْقِيكُمْ مِنَ الشَّرَابِ، وَيَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ، وَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ "، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ الْقَوْمُ عَلَيَّ، جَعَلَ يُشِيرُ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ، وَيَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيَّ فَقُلْتُ: مَا بِكُمْ ؟ يُشِيرُ بَعْضُكُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ، وَتَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيَّ ؟ فَقَالُوا: أَبْشِرْ بِبُشْرَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَإِنَّا نَعْرِفُ فِيكَ نَعْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُونِي بِمَا قَالَ لَهُمْ، فَأَطْعَمْتُهُمْ، وَسَقَيْتُهُمْ، وَزَوَّدْتُهُمْ، وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى دَلَلْتُهُمْ عَلَى الطَّرِيقِ، ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَهْلِي فَأَوْصَيْتُهُمْ بِإِبِلِي، ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا الَّذِي تَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ ؟ فَقَالَ: " أَدْعُو إِلَى شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ، وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانِ " فَقُلْتُ: إِذَا أَجَبْنَاكَ إِلَى هَذَا، فَنَحْنُ آمِنُونَ عَلَى أَهْلِنَا، وَدِمَائِنَا، وَأَمْوَالِنَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَأَسْلَمْتُ، وَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى قَوْمِي، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُمْ بِإِسْلَامِي، فَأَسْلَمَ عَلَى يَدَيَّ بَشَرٌ كَثِيرٌ مِنْهُمْ، ثُمَّ هَاجَرْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَيْنَمَا أَنَا عِنْدَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ، فَقَالَ لِي: " يَا عَمْرُو هَلْ لَكَ أَنْ أُرِيَكَ آيَةَ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَشْرَبُ الشَّرَابَ، وَيَمْشِي فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ "، قُلْتُ: بَلَى بِأَبِي أَنْتَ، قَالَ: " هَذَا وَقَوْمُهُ آيَةُ الْجَنَّةِ "، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَقَالَ لِي: " يَا عَمْرُو، هَلْ لَكَ أَنْ أُرِيَكَ آيَةَ النَّارِ ؟ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَشْرَبُ الشَّرَابَ، وَيَمْشِي فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ ؟ " قُلْتُ: بَلَى، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ، قَالَ: " هَذَا وَقَوْمُهُ آيَةُ النَّارِ " وَأَشَارَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ، فَلَمَّا وَقَعَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ، ذَكَرْتُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَفَرَرْتُ مِنْ آيَةِ النَّارِ إِلَى آيَةِ الْجَنَّةِ. وَتَرَى بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ قَاتِلِي بَعْدَ هَذَا ؟ قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: وَاللهِ، لَوْ كُنْتَ فِي جُحْرٍ فِي جَوْفِ جُحْرٍ لَاسْتَخْرَجَنِي بَنُو أُمَيَّةَ حَتَّى يَقْتُلُونِي

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition. They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you are sending us when we have no provisions, no food, and no knowledge of the road.' He said, 'You will pass by a man with a handsome face who will feed you food, give you drink, and guide you to the road, and he is from the people of Paradise.' When the people stopped at my place, they began signaling to one another and looking at me. I said, 'What is the matter with you? You signal to one another and look at me.' They said, 'Rejoice at the glad tidings from Allah and His Messenger, for we recognize in you the description given by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They told me what he had said to them. So I fed them, gave them drink, provided them with provisions, and went out with them until I guided them to the road. Then I returned to my family, instructed them regarding my camels, and then went out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, 'What do you call to?' He said, 'I call to the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakah, the pilgrimage to the House, and the fast of Ramadan.' I said, 'If we answer you to this, are we safe regarding our families, our blood, and our wealth?' He said, 'Yes.' So I became Muslim and returned to my people, informing them of my Islam. Many of them became Muslim at my hands. Then I emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. While I was with him one day, he said to me, 'O ʿAmr, would you like me to show you a sign of Paradise? He eats food, drinks drink, and walks in the markets.' I said, 'Yes, may my father be ransomed for you.' He said, 'This man and his people are a sign of Paradise,' and he pointed to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Then he said to me, 'O ʿAmr, would you like me to show you a sign of the Fire? He eats food, drinks drink, and walks in the markets.' I said, 'Yes, may my father be ransomed for you.' He said, 'This man and his people are a sign of the Fire,' and he pointed to a man. When the strife occurred, I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I fled from the sign of the Fire to the sign of Paradise. And do you think the Umayyads will kill me after this? I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'By Allah, even if I were in a hole within the depths of a hole, the Umayyads would extract me and kill me.'
