حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الرَّازِيُّ قَالَ: نَا الصَّلْتُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ قَالَ: نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ التَّيْمِيُّ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُجَاهِدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ:
الْوَلِيمَةُ حَقٌّ وَسُنَّةٌ، فَمَنْ دُعِيَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْ فَقَدْ عَصَى اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، وَالْخُرْسُ وَالْإِعْذَارُ وَالتَّوْكِيرُ أَنْتَ فِيهِ بِالْخِيَارِ "، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: إِنِّي وَاللهِ لَا أَدْرِي مَا الْخُرْسُ وَالْإِعْذَارُ وَالتَّوْكِيرُ ؟ قَالَ: " الْخُرْسُ: الْوِلَادَةُ، وَالْإِعْذَارُ: الْخِتَانُ، وَالتَّوْكِيرُ: الرَّجُلُ يَبْنِي الدَّارَ، وَيَنْزِلُ فِي الْقَوْمِ فَيَجْعَلُ الطَّعَامَ، فَيَدْعُوهُمْ، فَهُمْ بِالْخِيَارِ، إِنْ شَاءُوا أَجَابُوا، وَإِنْ شَاءُوا قَعَدُوا

✧ The walimah is a right and a sunnah. Whoever is invited and does not respond has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. As for the khurs, the i'dhar, and the tawkir, you have the choice in them." He said: I said: "By Allah, I do not know what the khurs, the i'dhar, and the tawkir are." He said: "The khurs is the birth, the i'dhar is the circumcision, and the tawkir is when a man builds a house, settles among a people, prepares food, and invites them. They have the choice: if they wish, they respond, and if they wish, they stay away.
