✧ I was in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a circle that included Abu Saʿid al-Khudri and ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr. Al-Husayn b. ʿAli passed by and greeted; the people returned his greeting, but ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr remained silent. Then Ibn ʿAmr raised his voice after the people fell silent and said: And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Then he turned to the people and said: Shall I not tell you who is the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of heaven? They said: Yes. He said: It is this one who has just departed. By Allah, I have not spoken a word to him, nor has he spoken a word to me since the nights of Siffin. By Allah, for him to be pleased with me is more beloved to me than to have the like of Uhud. Abu Saʿid al-Khudri said to him: Will you not go to him in the morning? He said: Yes. So they agreed to go to him in the morning, and I went with them. Abu Saʿid asked permission and was admitted, so we entered. Then he asked permission for Ibn ʿAmr, and he kept at it until al-Husayn granted him permission, and he entered. When Abu Saʿid saw him, he moved over for him, as he was sitting next to al-Husayn, and al-Husayn pulled him toward himself. Ibn ʿAmr stood and did not sit. When he saw that, he let go of Abu Saʿid, moved over for him, and he sat between them. Abu Saʿid related the story, and he said: Is it so, O Ibn ʿAmr? Do you know that I am the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of heaven? He said: Yes, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, you are the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of heaven. He said: Then what made you fight me and my father on the day of Siffin? By Allah, my father is better than me. He said: Yes, but ʿAmr complained about me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: ʿAbd Allah stands at night and fasts during the day. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Pray and sleep, fast and break your fast, and obey ʿAmr. When the day of Siffin came, he made me swear an oath. By Allah, I did not increase their numbers, nor draw a sword for them, nor thrust with a spear, nor shoot an arrow. Al-Husayn said to him: Do you not know that there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator? He said: Yes. He said: And so it was as if he accepted it from him.
