✧ I entered upon ʿĀʾishah, and ʿĀʾishah said: I entered upon Barīrah, who was a mukātabah (a slave with a contract of manumission). She said, “Buy me and set me free.” I said, “Yes.” Barīrah said, “My masters will not sell me unless they stipulate my walāʾ (patronage).” ʿĀʾishah said, “I have no need for that.” The Messenger of God ﷺ heard about that and mentioned it to ʿĀʾishah. She told him what they had said. He said, “Buy her and set her free, and let them stipulate whatever they wish.” So ʿĀʾishah bought her, and her masters stipulated the walāʾ. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Walāʾ belongs to the one who sets free, even if they stipulate a hundred conditions.”

machine translationʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ayman narrated it from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that he entered upon her and asked her, and she told him the hadith of Barīrah. He said in it: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Buy her and free her, and let them stipulate whatever they wish." It is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith from him.
