✧ He went in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he had separated from his wives, and he was on a bed of woven palm leaves. I looked and saw nothing in the house to catch the eye except the hide of a calf, whose smell was rising. I said: You are the Messenger of Allah and His chosen one, while Kisra and Caesar are in silk brocade and silk? He said: Are you in doubt, O Ibn al-Khattab? Those are a people whose reckoning has been hastened for them.

machine translationMarzūq b. Abī al-Hudhayl narrated it from al-Zuhrī and said: "from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿUmar," but he erred in his lineage; he is in fact ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Thawr. This is how the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) narrated it from al-Zuhrī. This hadith has many authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) routes from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿUmar.
