✧ Muʿawiyah b. Abi Sufyan proposed to Umm al-Dardaʾ after the death of Abu al-Dardaʾ, and Umm al-Dardaʾ said: I heard Abu al-Dardaʾ say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Any woman whose husband dies and she marries after him, she belongs to the last of her husbands.” And I would not choose you over Abu al-Dardaʾ. So Muʿawiyah wrote to her: “Then you must fast, for it is a means of cutting off desire.”
