✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the two afternoon prayers—Zuhr or 'Asr—and said the salam after two rak'ahs. The swift among the people left, saying: 'The prayer has been shortened, the prayer has been shortened.' Among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, but they were hesitant to speak to him. He went to a piece of wood in the mosque against which he used to place his hand. A man called Dhu al-Yadayn—long of hands—and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to call him 'Dhu al-Yadayn,' said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?' He said: 'I did not forget, nor has it been shortened.' Then he asked the people, and they said: 'Dhu al-Yadayn has spoken the truth.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and prayed two rak'ahs like his bowing or longer, then prostrated twice.
