✧ Umar performed Hajj in the year of the famine, the year sixteen. When he was between al-Suqya and al-Arj in the middle of the night, a rider appeared to him on the road and shouted: 'O caravan, is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among you?' Umar said to him: 'Woe to you, are you sane?' He said: 'Sanity brought me to you. Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away?' They said: 'He has passed away.' He wept and the people wept. He said: 'Who took charge of the matter after him?' They said: 'The son of Abu Quhafah.' He said: 'The pious one of Banu Taym?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Is he with you?' They said: 'He has passed away.' He said: 'Then he supplicated, and the people supplicated.' He said: 'Who took charge of the matter after him?' It was said: 'Umar b. al-Khattab.' He said: 'The fair-skinned one of Banu Adi?' They said: 'Yes, he is the one speaking to you.' He said: 'Why did you not mention the white one of Banu Umayyah or the bald one of Banu Hashim?' They said: 'That already happened. What is your need?' He said: 'I met the Messenger of Allah while I was Abu Aqil al-Juayli, at the pool of Juayl. I embraced Islam and pledged allegiance, and I drank with him a drink of sawiq. He drank the first part of it and gave me the last part. By Allah, I have continued to feel its fullness whenever I am hungry, its coolness whenever I am thirsty, and its quench whenever I am parched until this day of mine. Then I climbed this white mountain, I, my wife, and daughters of mine. I used to pray in it five prayers every day and night, fast one month in the year, and slaughter for the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. That is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me, until this year entered. By Allah, no sheep remained for us except one sheep, which the wolf attacked last night and ate part of it, and we ate part of it. Help, help!' Umar said: 'Help has come to you. Meet us at the water in the morning.' Umar went on until he came to the water, and he began waiting and delayed the departure because of him, but he did not come. He called the keeper of the water and said: 'Abu Aqil al-Juayli has with him three daughters and his wife. When he comes to you, spend on him, his family, and his children until I pass by you on my return, if Allah wills.' When Umar completed his Hajj, he returned and called the keeper of the water and said: 'What did Abu Aqil do?' He said: 'He came to me the next day, the day you told me, and he was feverish. He fell ill with me for some nights, then he died. That is his grave.' Umar turned to his companions and said: 'Allah did not approve of your trial for him.' Then he stood among the people and prayed over him, and he took charge of his daughters and wife, and he used to spend on them.
