✧ Abd Allah b. Mas'ud used to deliver sermons to us in Kufa, and he would say: "The wretched is one who was made wretched in his mother's womb, and the blessed is one who was made blessed in his mother's womb." Hudhayfa b. Asid, a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, said: "It is amazing concerning this man's statement. He says: 'The blessed is one who was made blessed in his mother's womb, and the wretched is one who was made wretched in his mother's womb.'" Abd Allah said: "O Hudhayfa, what amazes you about this?" Then he said: "Shall I tell you the explanation of that?" Then he raised the hadith and said: "Indeed, there is an angel entrusted with the womb. When God, the Mighty and Majestic, wills to create something, by God's permission, the angel says: 'O Lord, its lifespan?' So your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Then he says: 'O Lord, its sustenance?' So your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Then he says: 'Wretched or blessed?' So your Lord decrees and the angel writes. Thus it is, neither more nor less."
