✧ Mu'awiyah circumambulated the House and began to touch all the corners. Ibn 'Abbas said to him: "Why do you touch these two corners when the Prophet ﷺ did not touch them?" Mu'awiyah said: "No part of the House is abandoned." Ibn 'Abbas said: "Indeed, you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example." Mu'awiyah said: "You have spoken the truth."

machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿāwiyah, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning touching the corners of the Kaʿbah. He said: Qatādah narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Shuʿbah narrated it, and there is also disagreement about him. Ghundar, Muʿādh b. Muʿādh and Abū Usāmah narrated it from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿāwiyah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Khālid b. al-Ḥārith and Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān contradicted them, and narrated it from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ. Wahb b. Jarīr made it stop at the Companion (mawqūf), from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿāwiyah, as his own statement, and did not raise it to the Prophet. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith narrated it from Qatādah, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ, and did not mention Muʿāwiyah. The correct version is the statement of those who said: from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ. Ashhab b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated it from al-Layth b. Saʿd, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās; Ashhab was alone in narrating it.
